Oh! The Pascals!
Monday, January 27th, 2003This has been a pretty sucky day. All in all class went well. I got to present in Spanish today, so I didn’t lose my points for missing Friday. That made me rest a little easier. Unfortunately, he started talking about the research paper today, and that makes me a little scared for the amount of time I will have. He’ll probably do the same thing in Asian American studies tomorrow, as well.
Physics lecture was impossible to follow today. I tried to print off the important slides for lecture, but there was an error with the printer. I don’t know what it was. There were sixty-four slides for him to present in fifty minutes today. He did it, too. It was less than a slide a minute.
I’ve decided that this man is not fit to teach physics. It’s not that he’s not enthusiastic about it, or that he doesn’t know what he’s talking about. He seems to enjoy himself, and he seems quite knowledgable. The problem lies in the amount of work he’s exptecting. He wants us to do twenty multi-part physics problems a week, minumum, plus quesions, plus a problem set. Add those to the labs and we already have a tight schedule. One hour a week I get a recitation, and now he’s saying that we have to do five projects this semester. Plus a quiz every week and tests every five!
The problem sets that he asked us to do for tonight weren’t even related to our current classwork. One of the problems was a full chapter ahead of where we’re supposed to be. He wanted us to use Boyle’s law. I had to ask a chemical engineer what it even was. Then the problem required binomial expansion or the use of infinite series, which are not discussed in the prequisite for the course!
Right now I’m scared about this class. My tutoring prospect and I are in talks about getting one session a week going, so that should help. I also attend two supplimental instruction sessions a week, which should help, but haven’t helped me with comprehension yet.
As a matter of fact, the homework for tomorrow was so bad that at supplimental instruction tonight, there was something like fifty people in a thirty person room in Pearson Hall. People brought in desks from other classrooms, and eventually some guys brought in one of the hall benches because they couldn’t find desks! It was absolute madness!
Help.
