Bleeeeeeh… I just spent twenty fucking minutes on the phone with my Wal-Mart. You have no idea how horribly calls are routed around there. I got transferred to Personnel, transferred to a CSM (supposedly) at which point I listened to cell phone quality Wal-Mart Radio for fifteen minutes, the fitting room picked back up, and finally got me to a CSM; which I insisted that I didn’t need to talk to. Needless to say, I’m going in tomorrow after class to talk to people about all this in person. Crazy.
On a brighter note, I stayed up all late last night learning how to build a rocked out of two paperclips, tin foil, and two matches. How cool is that? It really launched too! If course, I don’t know if I could ever build it again. It was engineered with Gau’s “mad sick physics skillz” as he called them. They truly are, too. True, the rocked went about a foot, but anyone that can think up how to do that with those supplies that fast truly does have mad sick physics skillz. lol
I saw Gretchen today, too! Gretchen’s funny. Unfortunately she’s leaving at the end of the semester to sort some stuff out she says she needs to or something. Next semester she’s going to take classes at Kirkwood and to the University of Iowa (with Nic!) in the fall. I’ll miss Gretchen. :(
Calculus test this Friday. Eeeee. L’Hôpital’s rule owns you.
I’m considering skipping my mentor meeting tonight. It’s all an hour later, and I don’t want to stay on campus. Of course, I don’t know exactly what I’d do with the extra time. Probably the same thing I’d do at the meeting, but I just don’t feel like going. I’ll whine about it to Vero in calc. She’ll read about it here again. She’ll be all like, “Dammit, Julian.” ..Or something.
New CS assignment. Last one, for real this time. Unfortunately it’s due on Monday. Aaaah! It looks easy enough.
Xak got a new web page. Everyone go take a look. It’s not at Crosswinds anymore, so be sure to actually click on the link on the Loop’s front page or the one I put up. If you type in the URL you’ll get this rainbow thing Joan made.
…Looks like Gnutella is in trouble. It’s been a while since I used GnutellaNet, and last time I used it it was really slow. I know why now. It seems that the protocol for GnutellaNet is only at version 0
.4. What this means is that while it is completely usable, there are some small engineering bugs. The protocol was never meant to go above 350 nodes per network and originally was believed to be incapable above 5000 nodes (a node being any computer connected to GnutellaNet). Well, some work has been done on the protocol, and right now it’s holding about 30,000-50,000 nodes per day. Needless to say, there is serious fragmentation in the network.
Gnutella is the protocol that can’t die. It’s engineered specifically to not use central servers so that it can survive nuclear wars and hungry lawyers. Unfortunately, the protocol is weak, so the network is getting fradmented to the point that you may only connect to a few nodes. I still have faith in Gnutella. It’s just that right now, the network problems are making it fairly unusable. All of the issues have been addressed and it’s being worked on probably as I type this(it’s open source, so it’s worked on around the globe). I wonder how long it will take to make this usable again? Gnutella was cool before the injunction to shutdown Napster, let’s hope it gets cool again.
Honestly, this is a very crappy retelling of the story. It’s absolutely fascinating. If you’re interested, do some reasearch. :)
